Summary

An utterly delicious debut thriller that tells the story of the most likable murderess you will ever meet, perfect for fans of Riley Sager and Jessica Knoll。

“I could just kill you right now!” It’s something we’ve all thought at one time or another。 But Ruby has actually acted on it。 Three times, to be exact。

Though she may be a murderer, Ruby is not a sociopath。 She is an animal-loving therapist with a thriving practice。 She’s felt empathy and sympathy。 She’s had long-lasting friendships and relationships, and has a husband, Jason, whom she adores。 But the homicide detectives at Miami Beach PD are not convinced of her happy marriage。 When we meet Ruby, she is in a police interrogation room, being accused of Jason’s murder。 Which, ironically, is one murder that she did not commit, though her vicious mother-in-law and a scandal-obsessed public believe differently。 As she undergoes questioning, Ruby’s mind races back to all the details of her life that led her to this exact moment, and to the three dead bodies in her wake。 Because though she may not have killed her husband, Ruby certainly isn’t innocent。

Alternating between Ruby’s memories of her past crimes and her present-day fight to clear her name, Blood Sugar is a twisty, clever debut with an unforgettable protagonist who you can’t help but root for—an addicting mixture of sour and sweet。

Probably more in the 3 1/2 star range。 I really enjoyed the style of writing, which managed to keep my ever waning attention。 It's the storyline as a whole that felt like a fumble。 It reminded me of being on the precipice of orgasm, everything is chugging along great, you're waiting for this release。。。 but it never happens。 Overall you're not disappointed but also, you really are。 I have a strong feeling that if Rothchild improves, this will be the loss of virginity book。Sorry, but the void that Probably more in the 3 1/2 star range。 I really enjoyed the style of writing, which managed to keep my ever waning attention。 It's the storyline as a whole that felt like a fumble。 It reminded me of being on the precipice of orgasm, everything is chugging along great, you're waiting for this release。。。 but it never happens。 Overall you're not disappointed but also, you really are。 I have a strong feeling that if Rothchild improves, this will be the loss of virginity book。Sorry, but the void that Gillian Flynn has left in the privileged white woman goes wild genre continues to go unfilled。 。。。more

The writing is good and the plot has a lot of promise。 The first part of the book is moves along well and keeps you guessing as to what will happen next。 The second half gets a bit tedious and I found the ending disappointing。

I downloaded this as an audiobook because I heard someone talking about it on a podcast and was beginning a five hour long drive and wanted something fun and thrilling to keep me engaged。 It was pitched to me as a story about a quirky, likable murderer falsely accused of murdering her husband and I was really excited to pick it up。 I absolutely blew through the audiobook, but the narrator really grated on me and I think it made the character seem less like-able and more annoying。 Unlike my probl I downloaded this as an audiobook because I heard someone talking about it on a podcast and was beginning a five hour long drive and wanted something fun and thrilling to keep me engaged。 It was pitched to me as a story about a quirky, likable murderer falsely accused of murdering her husband and I was really excited to pick it up。 I absolutely blew through the audiobook, but the narrator really grated on me and I think it made the character seem less like-able and more annoying。 Unlike my problems with Finlay Donovan (in which I was ready to chuck her out the window for being so intolerably bad at getting away with murder,) Ruby is a competent, logical killer and I respect it。 That being said, this story really lacked tension and maybe that's because Ruby was just too smart。 The stakes were high, she was on trail for murder after all, but it just didn't keep me on the edge of my seat。 I'm curious how much of this had to do with my dislike for the audiobook narrator and if it would have been better if I read it in print, but we'll never know。 I feel like this would make an excellent mini-series though, and I would definitely tune in。For all of her insistence that she wasn't a sociopath, I couldn't connect with Ruby and didn't really understand or feel her love or hatred or sadness the way that I think we were supposed to。 Again, I unfortunately attribute this more to the way the narrator talked than the way it was written, but I felt like I was being told about all of Ruby's admirable qualities without ever feeling like her actions were particularly genuine。 I was frankly more interested in Roman's story than Ruby's and while I applaud Sascha Rothchild for keeping them platonic, I feel like we really could have done with a bit less of the whole 'Roman is so hot, god those abs, holy shit, those arms*' thing (*in a completely nonsexual, platonic way, of course)。 Roman's code of ethics was frankly more interesting than Ruby's was and I almost wish we had gotten his perspective once in a while as he figured Ruby out and did his own dubiously ethical misdeeds。 While I guess Ruby did suffer some consequences and fractured relationships as a result of the whole 'serial murderer' thing, it felt like this tied up with too many closed ends to really feel like the personal stakes for Ruby were there at all and I never understood why some people acted certain ways and others didn't。 Anyway, this one was sort of a miss for me, but it was an interesting premise and a good 'on the road'/'playing in the background' kind of read。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this one。 I was instantly pulled in from the first page。 This is more of a character study than a thriller, which I originally thought。 But the author did a great job of building everything up。 I had to know what happened and how everything played out so much so that I finished this in basically a day! A majority of the chapters in the book are super short, only 3 pages or so, which made it a very easy to get through quickly。

More like 3。5。 Entertaining and I liked all of the Mia/MB references。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Fun read about a 3 time murderer wrongly accused of a fourth。 Really a funky ending as the two most questionable characters do not get the justice they deserve。 Still, the educated narrator is fascinating。 ***

I really liked the premise of this book。 A girl who had killed three people but was being accused of the murder of a fourth person that she did not kill。 The writing style was decent, definitely not my favorite。 But it was the fast read which I enjoyed。 The ending felt a little rushed and a bit to neat, which I didn’t appreciate。 overall a decent book that i would recommend to anyone wanting to read a thriller book but isn’t used to the genre

Loved the author’s voice and the structure of the novel。 Learning of Ruby’s past as the present events unfold was strong。 My one qualm was the series of events leading to the climax, which was a shame because it was a strong five stars up until the 85% mark。

I couldn't put this book down。 The book starts with Ruby, a psychologist, therapist, sister and a widow accused of her husband's death, Jason the man she loved。 Jason was a type 1 diabetic as was their cat, Mr。 Cat。 Jason and his mother do not speak after their marriage as she wasn't a good parent, leaving Jason when he was two years old。 Jason died of low blood sugar because he didn't wake up when his diabetic alarm went off。 At first everyone is sympathetic to Ruby, but then things changed whe I couldn't put this book down。 The book starts with Ruby, a psychologist, therapist, sister and a widow accused of her husband's death, Jason the man she loved。 Jason was a type 1 diabetic as was their cat, Mr。 Cat。 Jason and his mother do not speak after their marriage as she wasn't a good parent, leaving Jason when he was two years old。 Jason died of low blood sugar because he didn't wake up when his diabetic alarm went off。 At first everyone is sympathetic to Ruby, but then things changed when she is accused of killing Jason。 Her whole life is falling apart, but Ruby has killed three people in the past when she was 5, 16 and 28。 She is worried she will be accused of those murders that she got away with。 As Ruby tells the story, she goes back in time to each murder and tells the story of why she killed them。 。。。more

Blood Sugar feels more like a character study than a traditional novel。 It's enjoyable and very quick。 (my copy says it's 326 pages, but the book is formatted so that each chapter starts on a right hand page, so there's often a blank page between the many short chapters, so this may have actually been under 300)。 The focus is on Ruby Simon a Type-A, animal loving, psychiatrist who was recently accused of killing her husband and three other people。 She didn't kill her husband, but the other three Blood Sugar feels more like a character study than a traditional novel。 It's enjoyable and very quick。 (my copy says it's 326 pages, but the book is formatted so that each chapter starts on a right hand page, so there's often a blank page between the many short chapters, so this may have actually been under 300)。 The focus is on Ruby Simon a Type-A, animal loving, psychiatrist who was recently accused of killing her husband and three other people。 She didn't kill her husband, but the other three she did。 You're going to spend a lot of time guessing what the deal is with Ruby as she has great depths of empathy as well as disturbing sociopathic tendencies。This is a book club book in a genre that I don't normally read。 I thought it was interesting that Ruby, a cold blooded killer (view spoiler)[since the age of 5 (hide spoiler)], is an endearing protagonist while one of the novel's antagonists is a respected detective who knows in his gut that Ruby is dangerous, but people more familiar with the genre may find this too simplistic, I don't know。 I will admit that the other antagonist (view spoiler)[Ruby's narcissistic mother-in-law (hide spoiler)] was very cliche, but (view spoiler)[I've never interacted with a real narcissist to my knowledge, so maybe they all come off as cartoon villain。 (hide spoiler)] Also, sometimes Ruby came off as cartoonishly Type A。 I'm saying this as someone with Type A tendencies who is close to her mother who also has Type A tendencies。I can tell Sascha Rothchild put a lot of thought into the structure of this novel。 The first 34 chapters (of 53) are a series of flashbacks Ruby has while being interviewed by the detective investigating her case。 We cold open on Ruby committing her first murder。 The following chapter reveals that Ruby is being interrogated by a police officer。 Then we get more information on what Ruby thought about her first victim which led to Ruby deciding to off him。 Overall, I like these choices, but sometimes I feel like Rothchild is making choices to deliberately gut punch her readers。 (view spoiler)[The first scene tries to portray the first victim, Duncan, as an average kid before revealing what an awful brat that little bully was。 More damning, is the thing with her college friend/defense attorney Roman。 I suspected he'd be murder #3 after he betrays her then expects her to cover for him being caught stealing test answers。 The portion on her undergrad years ends abruptly at chapter 13 to focus on her internship in grad school where she meets the actual 3rd victim, a former patient who was a low level aggressive asshole in my opinion。 Chapter 32 reveals that Roman is alive and doing very well and 34 reveals that the last victim is Evelyn, who we were previously told just got hit by a car。 (hide spoiler)] I don't have anything against unreliable narrators, but I thought Ruby was reliable outside of this unnecessary twist。Also, heads up to anyone thinking of picking this up。 There is a scene where someone attempts to sexually assault Ruby and some references to underage sex。 There is also a scene where a beloved pet dies, and there is a lot of focus on the mourning。 There was legitimately snot rolling down my face after that last one。 。。。more

I enjoyed reading this book, but I was hoping that there would be some kind of twist at the end。 Even though we are told in the summary of the book that Ruby did not kill her husband, Jason, I still held out hope that I would find out that she really did kill him, and I had been duped。 No such luck。 The ending did have somewhat of a twist, but I saw it coming from the get-go, so I didn't have that moment of shock when it was revealed。 Nevertheless, I enjoyed the story of Ruby and her propensity I enjoyed reading this book, but I was hoping that there would be some kind of twist at the end。 Even though we are told in the summary of the book that Ruby did not kill her husband, Jason, I still held out hope that I would find out that she really did kill him, and I had been duped。 No such luck。 The ending did have somewhat of a twist, but I saw it coming from the get-go, so I didn't have that moment of shock when it was revealed。 Nevertheless, I enjoyed the story of Ruby and her propensity to kill those she dislikes。 。。。more

I hate to say it, but I think Blood Sugar by Sascha Rothchild is guilty of being an overhyped book。 I didn't read any reviews prior to starting, but I did see many good things being said which got me really excited。 There is nothing wrong with it per se, but for all the "twists" the synopsis promises, there is really only 1。 And the book didn't really come off as a thriller to me, since there weren't any real thrills either。 I thought Rothchild's writing was very engaging, which is part of the r I hate to say it, but I think Blood Sugar by Sascha Rothchild is guilty of being an overhyped book。 I didn't read any reviews prior to starting, but I did see many good things being said which got me really excited。 There is nothing wrong with it per se, but for all the "twists" the synopsis promises, there is really only 1。 And the book didn't really come off as a thriller to me, since there weren't any real thrills either。 I thought Rothchild's writing was very engaging, which is part of the reason why I kept going until the very end。 I also liked Ruby as a character to a certain extent, especially her animal-loving heart。 And I loved hearing her rationale for killing people and why it was okay that she committed these crimes。 It reminded me a little bit of Dexter; except I love Dexter completely。 Another saving grace for Blood Sugar is that the audiobook is narrated by Allyson Ryan。 She for sure played a part in keeping me going and she felt like the perfect voice for Ruby。 The majority of the book really focuses on Ruby's life and not so much on the crimes she has committed, although we do end up getting those details as well。 I loved how the chapters were set up, and it was really unique having them all be 1-word titles。 This is one of those books that I really don't have a lot to say about since not much really happens (in my opinion)。 There are plenty of rave reviews though so if this sounds like something you would like, I definitely recommend checking it out。 I received a complimentary copy of this book。 Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own。 。。。more
